Summary

Are you interested in working with children with Down’s syndrome supporting their speech and communication development?

Detailed description

Up on Downs, a charity supporting the families of those with Downs syndrome in Hertfordshire, operates a well established Speech and Language Development programme and are seeking additional coworkers to support small groups of children.

Potential coworkers will undertake extensive, fully-funded Symbol UK starting in March 2025, in the form of live online modules. This training will enable you to explore the language skills associated with Down’s syndrome and you will learn about research and practice in the field alongside Speech and Language Therapists and other professionals.

Once initial training is completed candidates will move forwards to complete further modules using the Symbol UK co-worker training pack designed specifically for those working in speech development schemes such as ours.

From September 2025 trainees would begin small group work with children with DS (paid) with ongoing support from Symbol UK and Up on Downs. This work would take place on nine Saturday mornings per term, for 1-3 hours per week.

This role would be particularly suitable for those with experience of working with children with a learning disability and an interest in supporting speech and communication in these children.
