Summary
Help the RAF Museum to connect with our local community to share the RAF story and make a difference to Barnet and Colindale residents.Detailed description
The RAF Museum is committed to engaging with our local community – sharing and involving our community with the story of the RAF and Historic Hendon. We have a thriving programme of community engagement which takes place both at our Museum in Hendon and out and about in the community. We connect with families, young people, older residents and local groups. We are looking for Community Engagement volunteers to help us to continue this work and allow us to expand what we can offer. The role is really varied: one day you could be helping local children make and drop mini parachutes, another you might be assisting with an object handling session at a Barnet care home - you can pick and choose which events and sessions suit you.
What you will be doing: Supporting at local outreach sessions – both at our museum and out in the community, helping to prepare for outreach events and to pack down after events (if you feel able), helping to plan and deliver outreach activities, providing a warm, friendly welcome to our local community, taking photographs of outreach activities and collecting feedback from participants.
What we are looking for in you: You enjoy making people feel welcome and like to engage with people, you are interested in interacting with a wide range of people - from local families to care home residents - you are passionate about sharing the RAF story (in-depth knowledge of the RAF story is not a requirement; we can share it with you!), you are personable, friendly and approachable, you have or want to improve your interpersonal skills and you want to gain work experience (if applicable).
What we offer you: the opportunity to become part of a great team of volunteers and staff, improve your communication skills, gain experience, meet new people and have new experiences. Discounts in our onsite gift shop and café, free access to the Flight Zone and similar attractions on site, travel expenses reimbursed up to £14.50 per day, in line with our policy, free onsite parking, free entry to a wide selection of other museum and heritage sites and exhibitions nationwide.
How much time would you need to commit? We would like volunteers who can commit to four or more events per year. This is a very flexible role with outreach activities taking place on an ad hoc basis throughout the year. Usually outreach sessions will require 2-3 hours volunteering. Outreach sessions usually take place during the working week with some weekend and evening sessions.
