Detailed description

Volunteer Accountant – Job Description


Working with: Operations Lead, Fundraising Lead & Finance Team

Reporting to: Trustee Board

Hours and place of work   You will need to be available to work at least 2 days per month (home based), 

and attend our Trustee meetings once a month. This is a voluntary role. 


Purpose: As part of our Finance team you will lead and oversee our administrators who manage our daily bookkeeping. You will ensure our financial processes are completed and reports are produced both accurately and in a timely manner, as required by the Charity Commission and in line with current regulations. This is a key role that supports the sustainability and growth of PWHRC. This is a voluntary role. 


Role specification

  1. Reconcile accounts receivable and payable. 
  2. Preparing and submitting periodic financial reports to the Board of Trustees
  3. Processing income statements, balance sheets and other management accounting reports. 
  4. Oversee donor income from individuals, JustGiving, PayPal and other third-party donors.
  5. Assist where required with gift aid and HMRC claims.
  6. Prepare budgets and produce accurate monthly finance reports for Trustee meetings.
  7. Reviewing expenditure. 
  8. Produce and submit year end accounts.
  9. Liaise with the external accountant in a timely manner to ensure our accounts are examined prior to year end and submitted to the Charities Commission.
  10. Advise the Trustee Board of any compliance issues and initiate processes and reports as required.
  11. Any other ad hoc accounting work as required.


Person specification: 

Essential experience and knowledge 

  1. Bookkeeping experience 
  2. Accounting or management accounting qualification
  3. Attention to detail
  4. Proficiency in spreadsheets 
  5. Strong background in administration
  6. Ability to work to deadlines
  7. Experience in legal compliance and financial control


Desirable experience and knowledge

  1. Experience leading a small team  
  2. An interest in wildlife and conservation work
